Following the American technology
company Meta Platforms’ long legacy of finding inspiration and their unique
executions, we have now the illegitimate child of Instagram and Twitter, named
Threads. It is an online social media and social networking service functioning
similarly to microblogging platforms like Twitter with Instagram’s built-in
network. Users can post and share text, images, and videos; reply to, repost,
and like posts by others. Adjacent to Instagram, users must have an Instagram
account to sign up and are required to use the same handle.
The app is available on iOS and Android
with full functionality and on the web with limited functionality. With its
focus on simplicity and organization, Threads provides users with a streamlined
and efficient messaging experience. Threads
officially launched on July 5 in one hundred countries; the app faces
regulatory approval in the European Union. It reached 80 million users in its
first two days, becoming the fastest-growing platform of all time, surpassing
the record set by ChatGPT.
FEATURES OFFERED:
Categorizes your network:
One of the standout features of Threads
is its ability to prioritize and categorize conversations. The app
intelligently separates messages from close friends into a dedicated section
called "Close Friends." This feature allows users to quickly
access and respond to important messages, ensuring that they never miss out on
important updates or discussions.
Integration with
Instagram:
[P.S. Note that deleting your threads account may also delete
your Instagram account, a double-edged sword by the developers]
Another notable aspect of Threads is its
seamless integration with Instagram. As a companion app to Instagram,
Threads allows users to easily share photos, videos, and statuses directly from
their Instagram accounts. Whether it increases convenience or hindrance varies
from the user’s perspective.
Control over your shared media:
Threads also emphasize privacy and
control. Users have the option to customize their status and choose who can see
it, ensuring that they only share personal information with trusted contacts. The
app's focus on close friends and the ability to create custom friend lists
further enhances privacy over your media, allowing users to control who can
see their updates.
Good UI/UX:
The user interface of Threads is clean
and intuitive, making it easy to navigate and use. The app employs a
minimalistic design that puts emphasis on the content and conversations,
providing a distraction-free messaging experience.
THREADS VS TWITTER: an
actual war or exaggerated meme culture?
The entire internet is engaging in the
disarrayed Twitter v/s Threads controversy but the so-called “Twitter-wannabe”
is not designed to serve the same purpose as the original Twitter platform. In
terms of features, we may find similarities given the text-based supremacy of
Twitter but according to Meta developers Threads is supposed to fill in the
gaps of Twitter. It is designed to facilitate one-on-one or small group
conversations in a more intimate setting. With its integration with Instagram,
Threads is aimed to provide a user-specific experience with the same set of people.
Overall, Threads is geared towards fostering personal connections and providing
a streamlined messaging experience.
However, Twitter has served several
different and unique purposes in history. It focuses on real-time world
information and public conversations; the microblogging platform works for a
wide audience, creating a network of connections and interests. Dividing the
content through hashtags, we find the public’s opinions voiced, discovered, and
amplified widely throughout the world on this platform. Apart from worldly
affairs, petitions etc. Twitter is home to the social media’s culture of
shitposting, i.e., celebrating unhinged thoughts for the world (which has been
appreciated in turn). Perhaps that is why the public sentiment toward Twitter is comparatively
higher.
Regardless of these key differences, the Meta’s launch does pose threats to Twitter’s text-based social media monopoly but it is highly unlikely to turn into such competition that harms either of these tech giants as they may end up serving different target audiences.
LIMITATIONS AND
RESTRICTIONS
Despite the 500-word and 10-photo-sharing limit, it's worth noting that Threads is primarily designed for
communication with close friends and may not be suitable for those looking
for a comprehensive messaging platform. There are certain limitations you
must be aware of before signing up for Threads:
Limited functionality: Threads despite its
idealistic approach, lacks some of the advanced features found in other
messaging apps, such as voice and video calls, group video chats, or the
ability to send files or documents.
Dependency on Instagram: Threads is closely integrated with Instagram, and it
requires users to have an active Instagram account to use the app. This
dependency on Instagram may be a limitation for those who do not use or prefer
not to have an Instagram account.
Limited reach and
connections: Threads emphasize
communication with close friends and customized friend lists. While this can
enhance privacy and control, it also means that the app may not facilitate
connecting with a broader network or making new friends. If you are looking
for a platform to expand your social connections or engage with a wider
audience, Threads may not be the ideal choice.
Privacy issues over Meta’s data usage: Despite Meta’s wondrous feats over social media platforms, the company’s notoriety with user's personal info and security is concerning. This is primarily the issue with Threads launch in European Union (EU) due to strict cyber security and privacy laws. Hence make sure to check out the privacy policy before signing up. Although, it’s highly unlikely for your personal info to be leaked into the world but you should always know what you’re signing up for.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, Threads is a commendable
messaging app that excels in facilitating communication with close friends. Its
organization, privacy features, and integration with Instagram make it a
convenient choice for users who prioritize connecting with their inner circle. However,
if you require a broader range of features, connectivity with a wider network,
or cross-platform compatibility, other messaging apps may be more suitable. Of
course, these are early days and we will have to reserve our opinions till the
fediverse features come out.
